60 years and Still Going Strong

This year, 2018, Sunset House is celebrating their 60th anniversary, and they would like you to celebrate with them in Grand Cayman!

Away from the Seven Mile Beach strip, Sunset House is a pleasant combination of rural ambiance and Old Cayman charm. Only minutes from George Town, the Resort is perched on a picturesque coral ledge overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

The Sunset House tradition began in 1958 by Hebe Connors, a native 9th generation Caymanian, and her son Adrien Briggs. It was the first accommodation for divers travelling to Grand Cayman.

Miss Hebe added an eight room guest house to her original cottage, accommodating a small number of visitors. Now some 60 years later, Sunset House has grown to 36 air-conditioned units including a choice of courtyard rooms, ocean view rooms, suites and apartments all nestled in lush greenery along the south-west shore of the island.

Hebe Connors had an arrangement with Bob Soto, considered the father of recreational diving in the Cayman Islands, to take care of her diving guests. Bob worked on a Navy salvage tug in 1945 and brought this diving knowledge home to Cayman in the late 1950’s. Miss Hebe asked Bob to teach her son Adrien to dive. When he was not in school, 12 year old Adrien would accompany Bob on dive trips. According to Bob, Adrien ‘was a tough little dedicated diver’.

Adrien and his wife Bonnie started Sunset Divers in 1972, incorporating the dive shop into Sunset House, and so at that time, Sunset House became Grand Cayman’s Hotel for Divers by Divers.

One of the most famous attractions at Sunset House is the popular and casual My Bar.

The resort’s outdoor tiki bar sits on the sea edge overlooking the western horizon. It is the place to be during happy hour to watch the spectacular Cayman sunset. Sea Harvest restaurant is also on site offering a mouthwatering choice of West Indian and East Indian cuisine.

The original name of My Bar was Mahogany Dropoff

Sunset House is also the home of Cathy Church’s Underwater Photo Centre. Cathy Church and her expert staff are on hand to offer photo courses and critiques and the retail store has a full range of cameras, accessories and souvenirs.

With Sunset Divers on site, divers are offered the best diving Grand Cayman has to offer. Custom dive boats, with two new ones on their way for next season, Sunset Divers offers everything you need including professional instructors, full range of PADI courses, rinse tanks and newly built dive lockers. Everything you would expect from your resort dive shop.

The shore dive on the house reef never disappoints with the famous mermaid ‘Amphitrite’, a 9 foot tall bronze statue sitting at 55ft, keeping an ever present watch over the Sunset House reef. Venture a little further and you will find the wreck of the David Nicholson, a landing craft purposely sunk by Adrien as an artificial reef.

To celebrate their 60th Anniversary Sunset House is offering an exciting dive and room package, including 7 night’s accommodation, 6 days of two tank boat trips, unlimited shore diving, made-to-order breakfast, round-trip airport transfers, souvenir Sunset House t-shirt, glass of bubbly, and all tax & service charges. Packages start at $1435 double occupancy. Travel period May 12th – December 21st, 2018. Based on availability. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers. New reservations only.

Sunset House’s guests are treated to the same warm hospitality you would expect from your family & friends. It is a tradition passed down over 3 generations, and now to the grandchildren. Over the last 60 years, since 1958, the Briggs family have been entertaining visitors in their expanded home.
