Captain's Log or Should We Now Say Blog? |
(In this section every month, Dive Operations Manager Mike Pinnington keep us up to date with Sunset Diver's adventures. Look under Captain's Blog on the new site. Mike will have many smaller updates there regularly, too.)

We have had a great 2 months. The dive school is at it's busiest; we have had hammerheads and a manta ray on our house reef;
Doug Mc Neese from SSI was here and Monty is about to arrive with a large group from Little Rock, Arkansas. With 2 boats in the yard for their annual haul out everyone is working like crazy.
So to the dive school. We have seen an increase not only from overseas guests but the resident population of divers is set to increase dramatically. Sunset Divers are fortunate enough to be the host instructional facility for St. Mathews University. This prestigious medical school chose Sunset House as their dedicated dive center for the same reason as many others. The resort has everything needed for great diver training in one convenient location. Initially we began a class of 40 Open Water students with Pete and Freddy at the helm. Next semester we enroll just over 110 students in the program and will form an integral part of the students' academic week. We are extremely pleased to be able to offer the programs to the University. I'd like to thank Matt (Dive Coordinator) for his invaluable help. We are currently finalizing plans with the Veterinary School to provide them with diver training, so busy times are ahead. Pete tells me he is averaging nearly 25 students a week, which must make us the busiest school in the Caymans!

D ear Cathy Church
My wife and I were in the Group of 80 plus divers that attended the PADI Total Submersion, at the Sunset House. This was my first trip using a digital camera, being a 35MM film hold out. After my first day of diving with my Olympus 5060, I was ready to go back to my trusty 35mm. My dive buddy suggested I take the camera to your staff and see if they had any suggestions, other than to toss it. I was amazed at how helpful everyone was! Lara, looked at my camera, said no problem. All we need to do is to set it up properly. She took the camera and went into places I didn't know existed. Setting up two profiles in, my setting. What a difference this made to my pictures.
I wanted to let you know not only how knowledgeable and helpful they all were, to me and everyone their. But what is more important, they were all showing a genuine and sincere willingness to help everyone take and enjoy better pictures. You should be very proud of the staff you have working and representing you!
Sincerely
Bob Zimmerman
And from another guest....
Dear Mike and the crew,
Alexis and I want to thank you for a great adventure. While we missed the Whale Sharks and the Manta Rays (which you kept promising were just around the next reef), that just gives up something to look forward to the next time we see you. Seriously, we could not have been happier spending the week with all of you. Lots to see, warm water, great dive masters, a bar with the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen, comfortable beds, and a staff that clearly wants to make sure that you have a great time. We look forward to seeing you again.
Best to all,
Paul Beechen

What do Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Sting and Sunset House Have in Common?
A Message in the Bottle and Treasure!!!
Some promotions come and go. Here today, gone tomorrow. But a promotion that was put together while some ingenious business owners, sitting at My Bar back in 1987, just keep on going!!!
On June 13, 1987, Sunset House, in conjunction with Tortuga Rums and Cayman Airways, launched a 'one of a kind' promotion. Twelve Tortuga Rum bottles, each filled with 3 gift certificates-including a 4 day/3 night stay at Sunset House, a bottle of Tortuga Rum, and a one way ticket on Cayman Airways, originating from any of their gateway cities, were set 2 miles off the shores of Grand Cayman at exactly 4:00 p.m.
The bottles were coated with liquid plastic and epoxy sealed to ensure durability in any weather that they may encounter during their travels. Inside each of the bottles was a message typed on Tortuga Rum Company letter head describing when and where the bottles were set to sea and what to do with the bottles once found, where to send the bottle and stating the date and location where found, to claim the prize!
What was thought was the currents would carry them on shore anywhere from the Florida Keys to even possibly the European shoreline.
The idea came about when Mr. Robbie Hamaty, owner of Tortuga Rums, Mr. Mike Adams, operations manager for Cayman Airways and Sunset House owner Adrien Briggs were sitting around My Bar one evening drinking Tortuga Rum.
Four of the bottles were recovered and booty claimed with in a year. Not in Florida or Europe, but Texas! Now, over 19 years later, the 5th bottle has popped up!!! Again in Texas!
John Reed has been fishing off the gulf coast for years and it's that love of being near the water that's brought him some luck.
Now John is currently spending his honeymoon, July 22nd for a week at Sunset House, with a case of rum and two round trip tickets from Cayman Airways!!!!
For more on this great story, follow this link to KRIS TV in Corpus Christi, Texas. Make sure you click on the video, too!
Message in the Bottle!!!
And remember, there are 7 more bottles that have not been recovered yet? Could they be in Davy Jones Locker on a Dead Man's Chest? Could they be on the shores of Texas? Keep your eyes open! You never know!
