See you then!
Total Submersion 2007 was a complete success

We saw 85 divers descend on Sunset House with the sole intent of diving to the max and having a great time doing so. This year the event was blessed with calm seas and light winds and we were able to optimize a variety of dive sites both west and south. Theresa organized a terrific event with the help of Karin, Sarah, Keith and Bud. These guys and gals from PADI Diving Society really know how to arrange a fabulous week for a large number of dive hungry guests.

Sponsored by Ikelite, DAN and Sport Diver magazine and with some quality prizes on hand it was agreed this year was one to remember. Ty Sawyer from Sport Diver was here and as usual, our old friend was bombarded with questions and at the same time he was able to help, photo and enjoy the main event.
Ikelite was here in full force and we saw Stubby’s grand daughter attend her first event; we have a feeling it wont be her last. Jean and the gang were on hand to showcase all their products and offer help and advice with this superb range of housings, strobes and lights. Special congratulations to Stubby and Rhonda on their 30th wedding anniversary.

Ric King arrived early and left a week after the event-

Ric has dived with us more than any guest and he liked it so much this year he stayed an additional 7 days and guided a group from Indianapolis . Now there is dedication for you.

Keith and Karin were not only here to organize and run the event, they were here to dive and that’s exactly what they did. We saw some brilliant photos in the various competitions, had some memorable cocktails (the ones we could remember) and enjoyed the high spirits of this annual PADI Diving Society event.

If you have ever considered attending a PDS event you should do so. Theresa runs and organizes these trips all over the world, throughout the year and it brings together a variety of divers all intent on having fun diving.

We created a handful of Advanced Divers thanks to classes with Caesar. Freddy certified a bunch of Night Diver Specialties and MikeB organized some grueling Rescue certifications. We did 4 Stingray City trips, filled 400 tanks a day and cut 600 oranges!

This year we enjoyed a 40% repeat guest which reunited old friends and without question began life long relationships all because of a shared passion for scuba diving. So join the Society, go on the trips- it will change your life!

Very big thank you to Ash, Tara and Caeser without whom we would not have been able achieve success. Clive Webb at Red Sail deserves a special thank you- he knows why…

So everyone departed tired and fulfilled but the staff at Sunset Divers had a brief break for one day. This is a great time for us with busy boats and lots of group business. So it was straight back into the line of fire and once we had checked out the TS group we checked in a host of other eager divers. Scuba Emporium were here after a long break and while we see the guys at the dive shows its even better to see them in person at our place. Pat and Sherri Hammer bought down a large group and enjoyed the experience immensely. If you have ever been close to this group you’ll have seen that they enjoy every minute of the trip. As we did. When you have guests like this it’s easier for all concerned and work ceases to be a chore. Thanks guys.

Diving conditions improved throughout the month and we saw some great conditions this last week. Oily flat seas, being able to dive south, west and north. Hammerhead sightings, a lone sea horse and increased number of squid in the back yard made diving an absolute pleasure this week. Water temperature has quickly escalated to 83 degrees and even I didn’t have to use a wetsuit for the first time this year! So if you’re guessing on what suit to bring a 3mm shorty is just fine and should you feel the cold a 3mm full suit should suffice.

Oceanic showcased their new Heads Up Display mask this week with just about everybody getting the chance to try this much anticipated product. The general opinion was an emphatic ‘yes”- the mask displays all relevant information inside the mask. The display is clear and easy to view. You may scroll through various pages while underwater and I found it functional and easy to operate. The relevant info is beamed via transmitter from your first stage and the full deco/ mixed gas computer works effortlessly. I will be first in line to buy one, though after this positive review I am sure I will receive one free in the mail! Thanks Oceanic.

Sunset Divers have now all received their Apeks regulators. They are so good that the boys and girls actually paid for them themselves! The 200’s are beautifully made and breathe equally well. So if you’re in doubt about regulator choice you cannot go wrong with Apeks.

Freddy just finished our community effort for the school year and certified 15 new divers. This dive program will count to their GCE requirements and we hope to see them diving with us through out the summer months.

Memorial Day marks the pinnacle of our season, after which we slow to more gentle numbers and Rob can get back to his shipyard and start sanding and painting boats. Maintenance time for the resort, vehicles and equipment. Vacations for some and departures for others. Tom leaves us next month and we wish him well, we have a suspicion that ‘2 –stroke” will be back sooner than later. Emma Garner will assume his position in mid June. But in the meantime thank you Tom for a job very well done.

Good news is that Jax is staying! The lure of a luxury yacht, distant shores and high adventure wasn’t enough to tempt her away from Sunset Divers. She is staying and we’re glad.

Speaking of Jax she recently certified My9 New York Fox News Anchorman Harry Martin – a very nice guy!

Quick mention of our friend Paul Dewing. He is walking now without support and we see him most days. He has improved tremendously. Paul was supposed to help us with the Total Sub event but he lamely told us that he couldn’t lift a tank, come on Paul - intensive care was last month…..Paul is now able to apprehend us should we get too close. Nice one Paul- great to have you back.

I’m off to Kodiak Island this week and so will be out of the loop for a month, call the dive shop and Pete (he can also be contacted at p.smith@sunsethouse.com) will help you out.
The summer is a wonderful time here in the Cayman Islands. A great time of year to explore our reefs and walls, so look at our web page, make the reservation and come on down. You won’t regret it.
Safe Diving
