We have some awkward winds out of the south west at the moment, not typical for our region and because of this we have had some unusual critter sightings. This afternoon Pete reported a Hammerhead, about six feet on the shore side of our Mermaid! That’s in 30 ft of water. Another Hammerhead was seen this week on Northwest point harassing a Hawksbill turtle- we got the shot to prove it and a big thank you to Jacob for the donation.
Schooling squid and warming temperatures all add to our fantastic shore diving at Sunset House.
Eagle Ray is back! Rob and I did a sea trial and a shake down trip will follow this weekend. The boat has been completely gutted and rebuilt. With a John Deer power plant and totally rewired and restored. 18kts yesterday from a boat that once was unable to exceed 10! As usual Rob’s talents were utilized to their full extent and the result has created a craft that will serve Sunset Divers for the next decade. The boys at the Marina have been fantastic in the rebuild and to them we say a big thank you.
Sunset Divers recently enjoyed its busiest month in many, many years with high numbers of students and in house divers. The books are strong; to say the least and we approach our mad month of May.
Starting next weekend the Padi Diving Society annual event Total Submersion kicks of the proceedings with a mere 75 divers taking over the resort, 5 boats and our lives. It is, without question the best week of the year for us. Pure diving and great fun for staff and guests alike. Far from being a chore as one might imagine; the team relishes the competition, the camaraderie and the après activity with great delight. Ikelite are here once again in full force giving everyone the opportunity to sample their renowned product line. Stubby heads up the team instantly recognizable by his colorful diving apparel- you know what I mean when you see him…
Specialties, clinics and workshops and lots of diving are on the agenda and we anticipate another great response from the membership.
Many more groups coming through at this time of year. Many of the group sales were generated last October at the annual DEMA trade show in Orlando. Keith and Dee did a fine job selling our product and the diary is well stocked with avid divers for the next month. Memorial Day Weekend will see the second busiest weekend of the year with groups from all over the U.S coming in. Pan Aqua from New York, Dive 2 Survive and a host of others will enjoy the resort at this time.
Just completed some renovations on the dive shop with some much needed cosmetics and a larger, more efficient area for the staff to work in. Mark Evans the Editor from Sport Diver UK made his annual pilgrimage to our resort. Mark has an unrivalled passion for diving. Its great to catch up with him to hear his stories from around the world. A true advocate for our industry.
The best news this month is PC Paul Dewing coming home last last night. This is truly amazing. If you have been following the blog and news section of our site, you’ll know that Paul was involved in a extremely serious accident and it was suspected that the injuries were so serious that a positive outcome was in doubt. Paul has certainly surprised the medical team in Miami and he returns home to rehab and a large group of adoring friends. Last weekend’s fundraiser was a blinding success, with over $5000.00 dollars raised.
A lucky few of us were allowed to meet Paul on the tarmac as he de-planed yesterday. To see him walk, un-aided down the steps was pretty spectacular and there was not a dry eye in the house. Paul’s police dog, his boss and family and friends were all on hand to welcome our friend home.
Armed with his trademark Red Bull his first Port of Call was of course My Bar at Sunset House where he was welcomed by dozens of well wishers. Last night was truly an emotional evening for all concerned. We are grateful to have Paul home where he belongs.

And so we have another month of busy diving then it’s the staff turn to go on vacation. I’m off to Anchorage and Kodiak next month so see you there, Jax is possibly joining an incredible expedition yacht that is sailing the world so it may be a fond farewell to our favorite. Pete just got back from New Zealand so he wont be going anywhere for years and Freddy has had 5 vacations in 12 months so he is grounded too!
A big thank you to everyone who has visited us this year and special thanks to our many repeat guests. Always good to see familiar faces. The water is warming up nicely so come and see us. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
