Changing Seasons
2007-03-19 @ 07:04:00
With a slight increase in water temperature and a general feeling of seasons change, Dusk Diving is proving to generate great results. Out on the reef, dusk brings great excitement to many species, mating and spawning takes place every evening as the sun descends and provides the diver with great opportunity to get close to the action. Chromis, Creole Wrasse and Parrotfish all mate at this time resulting in just another reason why diving here is so appealing- you just never know what’s going to happen.

A group from Waterfront Diving Centre recently had a fine week with us. A lot warmer here than Burlington, Vermont and the group from Scuba Too enjoyed the warmer climes last month.
Fred and Judy Catella bought ample amounts of strong cheese and sausage for the guys which they consumed in minutes. Fred and Judy must be our most frequent guests with number of visits somewhere in the mid-twenties- we’re doing something right!

We can report an increase in SSI certifications recently. Since becoming a SSI Paradise Resort, we’re seeing plenty of Referral divers arriving to complete their programs. At this time of the year there’s still ice on the lake, so coming to the Caribbean makes perfect sense.

Our PADI classes are going well with our resident program. The schools and community involvement continues to increase with 15 new students enrolled today from Cayman Prep.

The resort is pretty busy at the moment and with Pete away in New Zealand everyone is putting in that extra effort. As you have seen by the pictures Rob has done a great job refitting Stingray II. We could not keep the fleet going if it wasn’t for his efforts, so a big thanks to him.

We’ll be at the New York dive show next week so if you have nothing to do come down and say hi and we can explain everything you need to know about Sunset House and Sunset Divers.
Until next month keep warm and think about visiting- you won’t be disappointed.

The Wisinki's

Spring Break is a great time for the family dive trip and Sunset House attracts good numbers. The convenient and safe location is the major draw. The shore diving is excellent and being located on the outskirts of George Town means everything is close at hand.

A prime example of the family vacation is this family from Nebraska. Cheryl, Tom, Kelsey and Ben all had a great week with us, the highlight being Stingray City and the freedom offered on the dive boats. Cheryl loved the staff, the food and our friendliness. Great people and we hope to see them again soon.

Taylor was visiting for the week with her Mom, Sally. They had a great time and quickly became firm favorites. Taylor took great pride in guiding her Mom around the reef and locating the Mermaid on her first attempt. So well done Taylor.

SSH Continues it's Support for

Leisa and Ben Strafuss from Memphis, TN, recently visited Cayman with their two sons, Justin and Andrew, and two of the boys' friends, Patrick and Ben. Roger Muller, Founder/President of Stay-Focused, a nonprofit organisation that enables teens with disabilities to become certified SCUBA divers, met Leisa and Ben last summer and discussed the possibility of getting Justin, age 16, who has cerebral palsy, certified in diving.

Coincidentally, the Strafuss family and Roger met up in Cayman the week of 12 March, and Justin successfully completed a Resort Dive at Sunset House. Both Leisa and Ben were thrilled. This sets the stage for Justin to complete a full Open Water certification with Stay-Focused in the near future.

"Often we need to make accommodations for Justin that are not necessary for this brother, Andrew," commented Justin's father Ben. "Today, however, the boys were on equal ground, which was great."

Again, many thanks to Mike Pinnington and Sunset House for their generous support of Stay-Focused and the Strafuss family.

Eagles Nest Suprise Visit!
2007-03-13 @ 03:08:55
In 1995 I saw my first Hammerhead on Eagles Nest and since then it’s been a special dive site for me. This area is a healthy mix of soft and hard corals, prolific fish life and a general biodiversity that makes it hard to beat. Because of the nutrient-rich water there are an abundance of Blue Chromis and Creole Wrasse, Hawksbill Turtle and a host of pelagic species. Once again I was rewarded with something a bit special.

Last weekend, Sue and I were approaching the line at the end of the dive when a Blue Marlin came by at about 40ft-not at all alarmed by our presence. This majestic fish slowly swam past inspecting us with those huge eyes. That again was a first for me here in the Cayman Islands. Just goes to show you never know what you’re going to see. Two African Pompano were seen by the Mermaid last week with their incredible trailing dorsal fin, great sport fish for the fly fisherman and an even better find for the diver.

For those of you who have been wondering where Rob and some of the other Sunset Divers Staff have been, here is where!
Harbour House Marina and working diligently detailing the boats we purchased from Divi earlier this year! The first completed vessel has been named Stingray II. Hopefully the other two will be completed in the near future!
