Katherine Berryhill's Excellent Adventure

My name is Katherine Berryhill, I am 14 years old, and I live in the United States. I earned my open water certification over the summer in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. As a reward, my grandfather took me to Cayman and I got to do my first dive in the ocean.

During the first three days in Cayman, I worked on getting my advanced open water certification, and Roger was my instructor. He was so great and helped me in so many ways. Thank you Roger for all of your help (and I am smiling while I am writing this!).

This dive trip was so incredible. Diving in the ocean was just as exciting and just as cool as I thought it would be. It sure is different than diving in the quarries we have in Indianapolis! I loved seeing all the fish and coral and I was also introduced to the mermaid! Probably the most surprising thing I got to see was the Kittiwake, the navy ship that had recently been sunk off Cayman Island. I have to admit that at first, I was hesitant to go see it. I was questioning it because ships are supposed to be above water, not on the bottom of the ocean.

The whole idea of it being under water was just spooky. When I saw it closer, it wasn’t spooky and actually it was cool. Since it had only been there for a couple of weeks, everything was still clean. Even the wheel was still shiny. I am so glad that I kept an open mind and went down to see it! This truly was an experience of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to do it again.

To everyone at Sunset House, thank you for all of your help. From driving the boats, to helping us suit up, to being there when I had questions, and for talking to us between dives, you guys were amazing! My grandfather has been diving with Sunset House for almost 40 years and with his trust in all of you, I knew I would be in good hands.

Thank you again and I hope to see you in 2012!

Sincerely,

Katherine Berryhill
